About GISLens

Hi, I’m Mike Young. GISLens is an independent GIS consulting service focused on helping people understand land and property more clearly through spatial analysis and mapping.

A challenge well framed is a challenge half solved.

Property questions rarely exist in a single dataset. Parcel boundaries, access, terrain, water, environmental conditions, development, regulations, and other factors may all contribute pieces of the picture.

GISLens brings those pieces together into a common spatial frame. Instead of considering scattered information separately, mapping makes it possible to see where features occur, how they relate to one another, and which relationships may matter most to the question being asked.

That reflects a simple belief behind my work: a clear visual picture can often communicate what pages of disconnected information cannot. My goal is not simply to produce maps, but to turn complex location-based information into something easier to see, evaluate, discuss, and use.

Analytical Background

My background combines Geographic Information Systems with many years of work in IT, business analysis, project management, requirements analysis, and complex information organization.

I spent two years with the North Carolina Department of Transportation as an Analyst on a major Esri-based project, with responsibilities focused on requirements and business analysis. That experience reinforced the importance of understanding source data, defining the right questions, documenting assumptions, and turning complex information into something useful for decision-making.

Land & Property Decision Support

GISLens supports landowners, buyers, developers, builders, brokers, consultants, conservation organizations, attorneys, and others who need a clearer understanding of a property or site.

Depending on the question, analysis may include parcel context, road and access conditions, wetlands, streams, flood hazards, terrain and slope, soils, zoning, nearby development, proximity relationships, and other available spatial information.

Methodology and Analytical Standards

Analysis begins with the question being asked and the best available source data for addressing it. Relevant datasets are brought together, compared spatially, and evaluated in context rather than treated as isolated layers.

Data sources, assumptions, methods, and limitations are documented so the work can be understood and evaluated rather than treated as a black box. I distinguish between what mapped data shows, what it may suggest, and what requires additional professional or regulatory investigation.

GISLens is designed as an early-stage screening and decision-support step. It helps identify mapped conditions, potential constraints, opportunities, and questions that may warrant closer investigation, allowing clients to better focus later investments in surveying, engineering, environmental fieldwork, permitting, legal review, and other specialized studies.

Focused, Hands-On Work

I take on a limited number of projects so each property receives focused, hands-on attention from the initial question through analysis, exhibit preparation, findings, and final delivery.

GISLens — Clarity Through Spatial Analysis

Samples of Work

The demonstration project below shows how GISLens frames property questions, brings relevant spatial information together, and communicates the resulting findings through clear maps and analysis.

Shows how GISLens brings parcel, access, hydrology, terrain, FEMA, and published NRCS soil information into one property screening report to identify mapped constraints and guide further due diligence.
